Event Liability

Event insurance for Airbnb and vacation rentals

Coverage for the events your policies pretend don't happen

Weddings, retreats, reunions — gatherings are part of the business, and they're precisely what standard host coverage and platform protection exclude. Velaris lets you approve events, charge for them, and actually be covered for them.

In short

Event insurance for an Airbnb or vacation rental covers the bodily injury and third-party property damage claims that arise from weddings, retreats, and parties, the gatherings that host policies, AirCover, and Vrbo's programs exclude. Velaris lets property managers approve an event, charge an event fee, and bind liability coverage for that specific stay at the limits their program selects.

What is event liability insurance?

Event liability insurance is liability coverage bound for one organized gathering at one property: a wedding, a corporate retreat, a milestone birthday, a reunion. It pays for bodily injury and third-party property damage the event causes, defends the host and the property manager if they are sued, and carries a limit chosen for that event, commonly $1M per occurrence. It exists because the liability layer of a short-term rental policy, like AirCover and Vrbo's liability program, is written for ordinary guest stays and excludes organized events, extra attendees and hired vendors.

For a vacation rental it is bought per reservation, not per year. The manager approves the event, the guest pays an event fee that funds the coverage and the extra cleaning and staffing, and the coverage attaches to that stay alongside the guest liability that stays in force. It is not event cancellation insurance, which protects whoever is paying for the event against postponement, and it is not the vendors' own liability, which caterers and planners should carry separately. The glossary entry has the short definition and FAQs.

The event gap in vacation rental coverage

Search for "event insurance for Airbnb" and you'll find law firms and horror stories — because until now there hasn't been a product built for this. Here's the exposure in plain terms.

Events happen — approved or not

Micro-weddings, reunions, corporate retreats, birthday dinners. Some you approve and price; some you discover from a noise sensor at 1am. Either way, the liability exposure lands on the property and the manager.

Standard coverage walks away

Host policies and platform protection are written for residential guest stays. Organized gatherings — extra attendees who aren't guests on the reservation, vendors, alcohol — sit outside what those products contemplate.

The claims are the expensive kind

Event incidents are third-party incidents: an injured attendee, a neighbor's damaged property, a vendor dispute. These are liability claims with legal costs attached, not a broken lamp.

Banning events isn't a strategy

Event-friendly properties command premium rates. The professional answer isn't prohibition — it's rules, screening, an event fee, and coverage that actually contemplates the gathering.

How it works

Approve the event. Attach the coverage.

  1. 1Define your event rules: which properties allow gatherings, attendee caps, quiet hours, vendor requirements
  2. 2Approve events at booking (or after) and apply an event fee alongside the reservation
  3. 3Event liability coverage attaches to that reservation — third-party bodily injury and property damage arising from the approved gathering, at the limits set in your program
  4. 4If something happens, the claim runs through the same Velaris workflow as any other incident, with the reservation and event details already on file

Event liability rides on the same program and PMS connection as your damage waiver — one program, one claims workflow, one set of rules your team applies everywhere.

Event coverage questions

Does Airbnb or Vrbo cover parties and events?

Platform protection is designed for ordinary guest stays and applies only to bookings made on that platform, under its terms. Organized events with additional attendees, vendors, or alcohol are exactly the scenarios where platform programs and standard host policies deny or exclude claims. That gap is what event liability coverage exists to fill.

What does vacation rental event liability insurance cover?

Third-party liability arising from an approved event at a covered property — bodily injury to attendees and damage to third-party property — at the limits selected in your program. Coverage terms are those of the issued policy or certificate; your program documents define approved event types, attendee limits, and conditions.

Can I charge guests for event coverage?

Yes — that's the model. Like a damage fee, an event fee is charged to the guest for the approved gathering and helps fund the added coverage. Event-friendly properties typically price events as a revenue line, not a favor.

What about unauthorized parties?

Unauthorized gatherings are primarily a prevention and enforcement problem: house rules, occupancy monitoring, and a damage program that responds to what happens. Event liability coverage is for the gatherings you approve. Pairing both — prevention for the parties you don't want, coverage for the events you do — is the complete answer.

Is this available for every property?

Event liability is added per program and per property, based on the property's suitability and your rules. Not all coverages are available in every state, and coverage exists only when a policy or certificate is issued — talk to us about your portfolio and which homes you want event-enabled.
